About Us

Among the North Texas children who play at the park and flock to TCBY after school are 117,600 with special needs. In that 117,600 are children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, those who are blind, deaf, are in wheelchairs, have Asperger’s, attention or sensory issues. Parents in this community refer to other children as “typical,” not “normal.” They prefer people-first phrases — children with special needs not special needs children. And they feel underserved in many ways. They struggle with schools, finances, and — for those on the more severe end of the special needs spectrum — what will happen to their children when they aren’t there to care for them.

To help serve this vibrant community, Thrive, a new quarterly publication from DallasChild made its debut in June, 2009. Thrive will assist parents of children with special needs by reporting on issues directly related to their lives, building community among families of children with special needs, and promoting acceptance. We are doing this because those 117,600 families — like every family — could use a little help along the way.

We realize that we are not the experts but are committed to finding them among the vast resources our area has to offer -- educators, researchers, medical specialist, advocates and parent, whom we believe are the ultimate experts on their children. Families living and thriving with children who have special needs require a comprehensive guide for local resources, thought-provoking news, a source for practical advice and a source for the humor that all parents  need to get through the day. We are that source.
